ICT

CSNII

Despite tremendous progress in neuroscience, ICT and related fields we are still unable to build perceptive, emotive and cognitive systems that are comparable with even simple insect brains with respect to function, energy sufficiency or computational power. One promising approach to answer this challenge is to translate principles underlying the abilities of natural systems into new technologies.

CHIC

Developing robust, reproducible, interoperable and collaborative hyper-models of diseases and normal physiology is a sine qua non necessity if rational, coherent and comprehensive exploitation of the invaluable information hidden within human multiscale biological data is envisaged.

SIFEM

The clinical evidence indicates that the number of people with all levels of hearing impairment and hearing loss is rising mainly due to a growing global population and longer life expectancies. Hearing loss caused by pathology in the cochlea or the cochlear nerve is classified as sensorineural hearing loss. The study of the normal function and pathology of the inner ear has unique difficulties as it is inaccessible during life and so, conventional techniques of pathologic studies such as biopsy and surgical excision are not feasible.

INFERNOS

Strong statistical fluctuations in meso- and nano-scale structures make their thermodynamic properties extremely dependent on the information available about them. The most basic process illustrating the importance of information to statistical systems is the information-to-energy conversion in the famous Maxwell's Demon (MD). Our primary goal is to study both experimentally and theoretically the statistics of fluctuations and the role of information in thermodynamics of the nano-scale systems. The first milestone will be the experimental realization of the nanoscale MD.

I-TREASURES

Cultural expression is not limited to architecture, monuments or collections of artifacts. It also includes fragile intangible live expressions, which involve knowledge and skills. Such expressions include music, dance, singing, theatre, human skills and craftsmanship. These manifestations of human intelligence and creativeness constitute our Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). ICH is at the same time traditional, contemporary and living, because it does not only refer to inherited knowledge but also to the renewal of contemporary cultural expressions.

PLAT4M

Silicon is now a mature integration platform that has brought CMOS microelectronics to mass-market application. The PLAT4M vision is that silicon photonics will lead to a similar revolution in the photonics sector.

SCALEQIT

The ScaleQIT vision is to "develop a conceptual platform for potentially disruptive technologies, advance their scope and breadth and speed up the process of bringing them from the lab to the real world." ScaleQIT will address the engineering side of quantum information processing (QIP), analyzing and implementing realistic scenarios for scaling-up superconducting hybrid systems for quantum computing and quantum simulation. The work will be based on proven, well-functioning circuits and components that show great promise for integration into useful QIP systems.

CROSSOVER

In an increasingly interdependent, unstable and complex world, as the financial crisis has shown, policy-makers lack the tools to anticipate emerging problems and the impact of possible solutions. At the same time, citizens are becoming more vocal in monitoring and influencing policy decisions. Emerging ICT tools for governance and policy modellling show great opportunities for decision-making in a complex world, through the dramatic and combined growth of data availability, analysis and simulation tools, participative and behavioural change technologies.

SMARTAGRIFOOD

The SmartAgriFood project addresses the food and agribusiness as a use case for the Future Internet. The intelligence, efficiency, sustainability and performance of the agri-food sector can be radically enhanced by using information & decision support systems that are tightly integrated with advanced internet-based networks & services. Concurrently, the sector provides extremely demanding use cases for Future Internet design from physical layer all the way up to the service layer.

X-LIKE

The goal of the X-LIKE project is to develop technology to monitor and aggregate knowledge that is currently spread across global mainstream and social media, and to enable cross-lingual services for publishers, media monitoring and business intelligence. In terms of research contributions, the aim is to combine scientific insights from several scientific areas to contribute in the area of cross-lingual text understanding.
