Your role in the project:
Coordinator, R&D performer and user of the technology
Assessment of your participation:
The project has developed three different combustion approaches dedicated to a wider use of bioethanol, as pure fuel (E100) or as various blends both in gasoline or within Diesel fuel. The technologies explored and developed within BEAUTY project have demonstrated a significant potential for an efficient use of bioethanol in the internal combustion engines with technological solutions that are in some cases potentially very close to an industrialization process and a potential for using higher bioethanol rate is foreseen especially for fleet markets where the use of a tailored fuel is not strictly depending from a national or EU fuel distribution network. The development activities carried out in the project have lead to a deep knowledge of the behaviour of ethanol blends in a HD turbocharged engine platforms; this platform, originally derived from a Diesel base, was already transformed into a Spark Ignited one to develop the version devoted to CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). The study has enabled to assess the feasibility of an ethanol dedicated version, optimizing many typical engine parameters. The realization of a first prototype engine set to operate with E100 (pure ethanol) and with E85 (15% ethanol by volume in gasoline) represented a first robust step for a potential future industrial development.
